Conventional cotton:

Accounts for 11% of pesticide use & 24% of insecticide use, but only 2.4% of world’s arable land

7 of top 15 pesticides used are “likely” or “known” human carcinogens
Includes cyanide, arsenic and parathion, which is 60 times more toxic than DDT

3 million tons of raw cottonseed is fed to beef and dairy cattle
. These by-products contain pesticide residues that end up in meat and dairy products.

Over 1/2 million tons of cottonseed oil is used in snack foods and salad dressings each year in the U.S.

Processed with heavy metal dyes and highly toxic chemicals, such as formaldehyde, that contaminates rivers, lakes, streams and sources of local drinking water. 90% of municipal water treatment facilities cannot remove these chemicals before they are pumped out to your faucet.

The making of 1 conventional white cotton T-shirt requires 1/3 of a pound of pesticides.

Synthetic fabrics (i.e. polyester, nylon, rayon, acrylic):


Treated with toxic chemicals like: PFCs (i.e. Teflon), formaldehyde, VOCs (volatile organic compounds) & dioxin-producing bleach


Nylon & Polyester are petroleum based

Rayon is made from wood pulp treated with caustic soda & sulphuric acid


Organic cotton is grown from non-GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) seeds without the use of pesticides, herbicides, insecticides or fertilizers. The cotton is either color-grown or dyed with low-impact, natural, non-toxic dyes.

Organic cotton plants are healthier, with longer staple fibers which translates into a higher quality cotton and a softer garment.

In 1997, large apparel companies purchased 2.15 million pounds of organic cotton, which eliminated an estimated 43,000 pounds of pesticides and 485,190 pounds of synthetic nitrogen fertilizer.


Hemp is 3x times stronger than cotton, anti-microbial and UV resistant (fabrics made of at least 50% hemp block UV rays).

It is a natural weed suppressor and naturally resists pest

Highly sustainable, it grows in a variety of conditions and can produce > 3 times the amount of fiber per acre than cotton.

Although hemp and marijuana have a similar leaf shape and are both “Cannabis", industrial hemp contains virtually no THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol), the active ingredient in marijuana.
